The Lie You Told for the Team

You are sitting at a table across from two investigators. You know what happened out there and so does everybody else in the building. A good man with nineteen years in is about to lose all of it over about four seconds of bad judgment, and the question they just asked you has an easy answer and a true answer and those are not the same answer. You give the easy one. It takes maybe six words.

Nobody ever came back on it. The case closed. Your annuals stayed clean, you put in your papers, and you walked out with a pension and a plaque with your badge number on it.

And here you are, however many years later, still running it.

This is not written for the officer who was in it for himself. Every profession has those and they are not the ones losing sleep. This is for the man who did the job right for a whole career and has exactly one file in the back of his head he has never said out loud to another human being.

Loyalty was never the sin

I want to deal with something first, because if I skip it a lot of men will stop reading, and they would be right to.

Loyalty is not the problem here. God built it into you on purpose. Jonathan put his own father’s throne at risk to protect David and Scripture treats him as a hero for it, not as a man with a character flaw. The instinct that made you unwilling to leave the man next to you is the same instinct that got your crew back out of the building. Nobody should be asking you to apologize for it.

What the code does is take that loyalty and point it somewhere it was never meant to go. Carrying a brother and covering for a brother are two different acts, and every man reading this already knows they are different, because you knew it at the table. Here is how God addresses it.

“You shall not spread a false report. You shall not join hands with a wicked man to be a malicious witness. You shall not fall in with the many to do evil, nor shall you bear witness in a lawsuit, siding with the many, so as to pervert justice,”

Exodus 23:1-2, ESV

Read what God is actually going after. He is not warning about some guy off by himself inventing a story out of nothing. He says do not fall in with the many. He is describing a room where everybody has already settled on what the story is going to be, and the only thing left to determine is whether you go along with it. That is not a hypothetical. That is a briefing room, a hallway conversation before the interview, a look across a table. God described the pressure in that room three thousand years before you sat in it.

What John told the soldiers who asked

I used this passage last week in the centurion study and I only used half of it.

John is at the Jordan preaching repentance and the crowds keep asking him what they are supposed to actually do about it. Tax collectors ask. Then soldiers ask, and these are professional men carrying weapons for a government, enforcing somebody else’s occupation over their own country. They put a question to him that most men in our line of work have asked God quietly at some point.

“Soldiers also asked him, ‘And we, what shall we do?’ And he said to them, ‘Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your wages.’”

Luke 3:14, ESV

Last week the point was that John did not tell them to quit. He handed them instructions for doing the job clean, and for men who have wondered whether the uniform itself is the problem, that is an enormous thing.

Now look at what he actually named. John could have started anywhere with those soldiers. Their use of force. Their treatment of civilians. The fact that they were the instrument of a foreign power holding down Israel. What he put first, in front of a soldier asking what repentance looks like in his profession, was using the position to say something about a man that was not true.

You have probably spent twenty years filing what you did under paperwork. A technicality. Something that never really hurt anybody. The last prophet before Christ got asked directly by men in your job what repentance meant for them, and false accusation is what came out of his mouth first.

A year of silence, and what it cost him

David wrote Psalm 32 after Bathsheba. People read it as a psalm about forgiveness and skip the part that gets you there, which is that between the sin and Nathan showing up at his door there was roughly a year, and during that year David said nothing to anybody. He ran a kingdom. He held court. He led worship. He kept his mouth shut for twelve months while everything looked fine from the outside.

Here is what he said that year did to him.

“For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not cover my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,’ and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah”

Psalm 32:3-5, ESV

Bones wasting away. Strength dried up like a field in August. That is not poetry about feeling bad, that is a man giving you a physical inventory, and any man who has carried something twenty years is going to recognize the list. Waking at three and not getting back down. The blood pressure numbers the doctor keeps circling. What you drink and how early you start. A temper your wife learned to forecast the way people forecast weather, so that she knows by Thursday what Saturday is going to be.

I am not telling you every health problem you have traces back to one report, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. What David tells us plainly is that concealment has a price, that the price gets paid out of the body, and that a lot of men in our profession have been paying that bill for decades without ever once naming what the bill was for.

Concealing is something you did this morning

“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

Proverbs 28:13, ESV

Conceals. Present tense, and Solomon chose it on purpose. He is not describing an afternoon in 2003. He is describing something you did this morning and will do again tomorrow morning.

Run the arithmetic on that. The lie took six words and maybe an hour of your life. The concealment has been a daily decision every day since, and if it happened twenty years ago you have made that same decision something north of seven thousand times without ever consciously making it again. It became the water you swim in.

There is relief buried in that if you look for it. If the whole problem sat back in 2003, you would have no move available, because nobody gets to go back there and answer differently. But concealment is happening now, in the present, this week. Anything happening now is something you can still act on.

When somebody else is still paying

Most preaching on this collapses two very different situations into one, and it is not honest to do that, so sort out which one you are actually in before you go any further.

In the first, you were the only one who took damage. You covered for a man who came in hungover. You backed a story about who was driving the unit. He got a second chance, straightened himself out, retired clean, and there is nobody walking around today worse off for what you said. That is real sin, it needs confessed, and the account settles between you, God, and one other man.

In the second, somebody is still paying. A man did time. A family got handed a version of how their son died that was not true and they built the rest of their lives on it. A guy lost his certification while the one who earned the discipline kept his and made sergeant. Scripture handles that case differently, because now there is a neighbor involved, and God has always been specific about what you owe a neighbor you deceived. Leviticus 6 lays out the guilt offering, then adds restitution on top of it, full value plus a fifth, paid to the person on the day you admit it.

When a man in a genuinely corrupt profession got saved in the Gospels, watch what surfaced first.

“And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, ‘Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold.’”

Luke 19:8, ESV

Nobody handed Zacchaeus a list. Jesus had not asked him for a thing. The man met Christ and the first words out of his mouth were about the people he had cheated, and then he went looking for them. Fourfold, which is more than the law required of him.

What you actually do about it

Four things, in this order, and the order is not decoration.

One. God, tonight. Not Sunday morning. Tonight, in your truck in the driveway or in your chair after the house goes quiet. Name the specific thing out loud. Not a general request for forgiveness over your sins, name the report, the date if you still have it, the man. You are not informing God of anything He does not already know. You are ending the concealment, and the concealment is the part that has been eating you.

Two. One man who can hear it. James says confess to one another, and the horizontal half is not optional. A pastor, a chaplain, a believer who will not repeat it. If there is no such man in your life, that is its own problem and it is worth fixing this month. I wrote a study back in Week 10 called “You Believe. You Just Stopped Going to Church.” If the reason you have nobody is that you quietly stopped showing up somewhere, start there.

Three. If there is legal exposure, get a lawyer before you get an investigator. That is not hedging on repentance and it is not cowardice. You have a wife and a pension, and stewardship of your family is also a command. Find out what you are actually exposed to before you pick up a phone.

Four. Restitution where somebody is still carrying it. If a person is out there holding weight that belongs to you, the account does not close because you felt bad about it for another twenty years. What restitution looks like depends entirely on the case, which is exactly why step three comes before this one.

Healed

“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”

James 5:16, ESV

Healed is the word James lands on. Not exposed, not humiliated, not stripped of everything you built. Healed. And you have spent years trying to reach it by managing the thing instead of confessing it, and the managing has not worked, and you already know the managing has not worked or you would not have read this far.

Somebody is going to tell me this one is different. Too old, too far gone, too tangled up in other men’s lives to touch now. I wrote about that too, in a study called “Jesus Didn’t Define Peter By His Worst Moment.” Peter lied about knowing Christ three separate times, out loud, in public, in a courtyard full of witnesses, to save his own skin. Christ restored him on a beach and handed him a mission.

Pray for the man you covered for, wherever he ended up. Pray for whoever came out on the wrong side of it, if there was somebody. Then ask God for the nerve to say the specific thing out loud to one other person this week.
