You are sitting in service with a gun on your hip and Romans 12 comes up on the screen. Never avenge yourselves. If your enemy is hungry, feed him. Overcome evil with good. And you read it thinking about a man you arrested for what he was doing to a child, or about what you would actually do if somebody came through the doors right then with a rifle. So you carry the question home and never say it out loud in that building. What if the evil cannot be overcome with good? Am I supposed to feed him?
Paul answers that question six verses later in the same letter. Most readers never get to the answer because they stop at the end of the chapter, and the chapter is not Paul’s.
The chapter break is not in the letter
Paul dictated one continuous letter to the church at Rome. Stephen Langton, the Archbishop of Canterbury, added the chapter divisions around 1227, roughly twelve hundred years after it was written. Robert Estienne, a French printer, added the verse numbers in 1551. Those numbers are a filing system that lets a room full of people find the same line at the same time, and they have earned their keep for five centuries. They are not inspired text. Here the division landed in the middle of one argument and split it, and warriors have been reading half of it ever since.
Romans 12:19 says, “Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, ‘Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.’” Six verses on, Romans 13:4 says, “For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”
The word translated “avenger” in chapter 13 comes off the same Greek root as “avenge” in chapter 12, and Paul is doing that deliberately. He takes the sword out of the private citizen’s hand, puts it in the hand of the governing authority, and calls that authority God’s servant twice inside three verses. There is no other secular office in the New Testament that Paul talks about that way. Evil is not getting a pass in Romans 12. It is being routed through a channel that is not you, alone, on your own time, over something that was done to you.
Vengeance and defense are two different acts
Vengeance is payback and payback comes after. The harm is finished, the man walked, and you go settle up. Paul forbids it because a man settling his own score has no way to be fair about it. You cannot be the victim, the investigator, the judge, and the man who carries out the sentence all at once. That is not a moral rule invented by the church. Any cop who has watched a family handle something themselves knows exactly how it goes.
Stopping an attack in progress is not payback. Nothing is being settled, because the man is not finished. You are putting your body between him and the person he came to kill. It is the difference between a tourniquet and a beating. Both are force applied to a man’s leg, and for about a second on video they can look alike, but nobody who has done either one has ever confused them.
Paul wrote the condition into the passage himself, one verse ahead of the one everybody quotes. Romans 12:18 says, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.” If possible. So far as it depends on you. He knew there would be days when it was not possible and did not depend on you, because the other man made his decision before he got out of the car. A command to lay down and take it in every circumstance does not arrive with two conditions bolted onto the front of it.
The enemy in verse 20 is a man you can feed
Verse 20 is specific about who it has in view. “To the contrary, ‘if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.’” Paul is quoting Proverbs 25:21. The enemy in that verse is hungry and thirsty, which means he is a man you can hand a plate of food to.
That is a real enemy and the command on him is real. He is the neighbor who ran his mouth about you over the fence line, the coworker who went after your position, the brother-in-law who has not spoken to you since 2019. Most of us have somebody in that column we have been quietly refusing to feed for years, and Paul is not letting any of us out of it.
A man crossing a church lobby with a rifle is not hungry. Force a verse to answer a question it was never asked and you will get a wrong answer delivered with confidence. The same failure shows up in police work every time somebody takes a holding about a traffic stop and tries to run a search warrant off it.
What the good looks like when the evil is a man
“Overcome evil with good” never says the good has to be aimed at the offender. The sentence says overcome the evil. When the evil in the room is a man hurting somebody, Scripture is direct about what God expects.
Psalm 82:4 says, “Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Proverbs 24:11 says, “Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter.” Those are commands, not permissions granted with a sigh. God is not asking anybody to feel bad about the slaughter. He is telling you to hold the man back from it.
Scripture is also comfortable with what that takes. Exodus 22:2 puts no bloodguilt on the man who strikes down a thief breaking in at night. Nehemiah armed every worker on the wall and told them to fight for their brothers, their sons, their daughters, their wives, and their homes. In Luke 22:36 Jesus told the disciples that the man without a sword should sell his cloak and buy one. When you stop a man in that hallway, the good is the child who walks out of the building alive. That is the good the verse asked you for.
The man abusing a child
The same framework runs here, and I will say it the way I would say it to a pastor across a table, because the church has been soft on this for a long time and children paid the bill.
You do not counsel him out of it. You do not keep it in-house to protect the ministry’s name. You report it, you preserve whatever evidence exists, you cooperate through prosecution, and you make certain he never has access to a child in that building again. Every one of those steps hands him to the sword God appointed in Romans 13. None of it is vengeance. It is Paul’s process, run correctly.
If someone in your leadership believes the church has standing to keep it quiet, put Matthew 18:6 in front of him and let him read what Jesus said about a millstone and the depth of the sea. Christ was not soft on this, and a church that has read Him has no business being soft on it either.
Where Romans 12 does land on you
Romans 12 has your name on it. It is not talking about the six seconds in the hallway. It is talking about the twenty years after.
I mean the man you arrested in 1998 who is out now, and you know the street he lives on, and you have thought about driving down it. I mean the defendant who looked over and smiled when the verdict came back. I mean whatever was done to your kid. The hate a man carries quietly for two decades is exactly what Paul is after, and left alone it works on him from the inside for the rest of his life. I have watched it hollow out guys I went through the academy with, and every one of them thought he was fine.
Vengeance belongs to God. He has better information than you ever had on your best day and He is never late. You did your job. Set the rest of it down.
What to do this week
If you serve on a security team, read Romans 12:14 through 13:7 out loud in one sitting before service, with no chapter break called out. Let the men hear the argument run continuously. Most of them have never heard it that way and most of them have been carrying the same question.
If your church has no written child protection policy with a mandatory outside-reporting clause, that is the gap to close this month. Not a conversation about it, a document.
And if you are carrying something from the job, name it in prayer this week and hand it over. Then call a brother who is carrying one too.
